Volume Rendering of AMR Simulations

چکیده
High-resolution simulations often rely on the Adaptive Mesh Resolution (AMR) technique to optimize memory consumption versus attainable precision. While this technique allows for dramatic improvements in terms of computing performance, the analysis and visualization of its data outputs remain challenging. The lack of effective volume renderers for the octree-based AMR used by the RAMSES simulation program has led to the development of the solutions presented in this paper. Two custom algorithms are discussed, based on the splatting and the ray-casting techniques. Their usage is illustrated in the context of the visualization of a high-resolution, 6000processor simulation of a Milky Way-like galaxy. Performance obtained in terms of memory management and parallelism speedup are presented.

Remote Interactive Direct Volume Rendering of AMR Data
We describe a framework for direct volume rendering (DVR) of adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) data that operates directly on the hierarchical AMR grid structure, without the need to resample data onto a single uniform rectilinear grid. The framework can be used for a range of renderers optimized for particular hardware architectures: a hardwareassisted renderer for single-processor graphics works...
متن کاملVisualization of Adaptive Mesh Refinement Data
The complexity of physical phenomena often varies substantially over space and time. There can be regions where a physical phenomenon/quantity varies very little over a large extent. At the same time, there can be small regions where the same quantity exhibits highly complex variations. Adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) is a technique used in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to simulate phenomen...
متن کاملParallel Rendering of 3D AMR Data on the SGI/Cray T3E
This paper describes work-in-progress on developing parallel visualization strategies for 3D Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) data. AMR is a simple and powerful tool for modeling many important scientific and engineering problems. However, visualization tools for 3D AMR data are not generally available. Converting AMR data onto a uniform mesh would result in high storage requirements, and renderi...
متن کاملFast Volume Rendering of Sparse Datasets Using Adaptive Mesh Refinement
In this paper we present an algorithm that accelerates 3D texturebased volume rendering of large and sparse data sets. A hierarchical data structure (known as AMR tree) consisting of nested uniform grids is employed in order to efficiently encode regions of interest. The hierarchies resulting from this kind of space partitioning yield a good balance between the amount of volume to render and th...

The analysis of complex multiphysics astrophysical simulations presents a unique and rapidly growing set of challenges: reproducibility, parallelization, and vast increases in data size and complexity chief among them. In order to meet these challenges, and in order to open up new avenues for collaboration between users of multiple simulation platforms, we present yt, an open source, communityd...
